Michael J. Newman is a Partner in the Labor & Employment Department, and serves as Chair of the Department's Appellate Practice Group. His practice focuses on the representation of public and private employers, both large and small, in all phases of labor and employment law, as well as trial and appellate litigation in the state and federal courts. In 2008, he served as co-counsel for a case heard before the United States Supreme Court. Michael's experience involving alternative dispute resolution - in particular, mediation and arbitration - is extensive: he attended the Advanced Mediation Program at Harvard Law School; he is a neutral for the American Arbitration Association (AAA); and he frequently is asked to serve as a mediator. He also has extensive experience counseling clients in regard to ERISA litigation and administrative proceedings.

Michael holds significant leadership roles for the Federal Bar Association and the Cincinnati Bar Association, and is Judicial Profiles Editor for the national magazine, The Federal Lawyer. He co-authors a monthly column on Labor & Employment law for the magazine. He also serves as statewide Chair for the Ohio State Bar Association's Federal Courts and Practice Committee. Michael is a frequent guest lecturer on employment and litigation topics, and previously taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, among other law schools. He clerked on both the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

Michael has been named a “leading lawyer” multiple times by Cincy Business Magazine, and has the distinction of being named both an Ohio Super Lawyer and as one of the Best Lawyers in America in Labor & Employment Law.
