John Canfield is a Partner in the Corporate Department and member of the Government Relations, Health Care, and Insurance Practice Groups. John focuses his practice on government relations, insurance and health care law. He has extensive experience with insurance coverage disputes and extra-contractual bad faith issues. He brings extensive legislative and regulatory experience to the firm.

He previously spent 16 years as corporate counsel for the State Farm Insurance Companies in Charleston. He also served as the company's lobbyist at the West Virginia Legislature and handled the company's regulatory affairs at the West Virginia Insurance Commission. While serving as the company lobbyist, John played a key role in the passage of the state's comprehensive insurance and civil justice reform legislation.

John currently serves on the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce and also serves as the Chairman of its Government Relations committee. He served five terms as the President of the West Virginia Insurance Federation, the state trade association representing property and casualty insurers in West Virginia. He is also a former Board member of the West Virginia Insurance Guaranty Association and the West Virginia Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association.

John has prior experience as an Administrative Law Judge for the West Virginia Workers' Compensation Office of Judges, and as an enforcement attorney with the Federal Election Commission in Washington, D.C.
